My team members, Josh, Craig, Mike, Joe and myself chose to help support the Alex’s Lemonade Stand organization through our 10x10x10 project. I remember learning about Alexandra Scott and her battle with cancer when I was a child myself and immediately feeling that sinking pit in my stomach. The devastation of childhood cancer had affected me, even though I was a child myself. Alex Scott would have been twenty-one today had she not lost her battle to neuroblastoma on August 1st, 2004. Although Alex had accomplished more in her eight years than most do in a lifetime, she did not get to live to her full potential. We chose Alex’s Lemonade Stand to help give back to those young lives who never got to reach their full potential due to the viciousness of childhood cancer. Through this project we hope to give voice to those young lives taken by cancer. We are hopeful that with the help of the money we raise for Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a cure for cancer will be discovered.
Brainstorming ideas to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand has been very fun for my team members and myself. Alex’s Lemonade Stand is an organization where you can get really creative when fundraising. Some great ideas that we have come up with are Lemonade Pong at Spring Fling, lemonade stands at Temple sports games, happy hours at local bars, and my personal favorite, “The Lemon Smile Challenge.” The Lemon Smile Challenge is when you take a video or picture of yourself biting into a lemon and capture the sour face you make. The challenge is trying to smile through the sourness! We came up with this challenge to create and spread awareness for Alex’s Lemonade Stand in a fun, silly, and child-friendly way. Our aim is to share a donation link along with the challenge videos and the hashtag- #LemonSmileChallenge- to get donations (think of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which raised over $115 million dollars for the ALS Foundation!)
Since we have not implemented any of our ideas yet, we do not know how successful the outcome will be, but we are extremely hopeful for the best! We are so excited to be doing charitable work for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This organization is truly amazing and we hope to contribute to them as much as possible!
